Gunmen shoot Rivers Bolt driver, snatch car, victim hospitalised

Gunmen suspected to be car snatchers have shot an E-hailing car driver and reportedly snatched his vehicle at the Rumuokalabo area of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

This came barely 48 hours after the state Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi, paraded five suspected car snatchers arrested in different parts of the state, some of whom dispossessed Bolt drivers of their vehicles.

An eyewitness said he was walking towards the D/Line area of the metropolis and suddenly heard voices in a vehicle as if people were fighting.

The source who pleaded anonymity said the incident occurred at about 10:12pm at Rumuokalagbor on Monday.

He added, “On a closer look, I saw that two men inside a red Spider car, one in front and another behind were dragging with the driver and punching him on his face.

“Next thing I heard gunshots and they zoomed off with the car. So, I ran backward and saw that the driver had been shot and pushed out of the vehicle. So, I and other people that came around and saw that it was a Bolt driver who was saying they had shot him on the leg and took his car.

“He was bleeding and there was blood all over him. So, he was rushed to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital for treatment.”

He stated that immediately the gunshot was heard, few people from the adjourning streets who were still outside took to their heels.

When contained, the spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said she would find out from the Divisional Police Officer and get back to our correspondent.

Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police, had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report on Wednesday evening.
